I obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering from McGill University in 1983, graduating with Distinction and as a University Scholar. At McGill I was funded by the National Research Council of Canada to investigate earthquake resistant structures, and graduated with a Masters of Engineering  degree in Civil Engineering in 1987.

I pursued legal studies at the University of Toronto where I obtained my J.D. (Juris Doctor) in 1988, and articled with the law firm of Gowling & Henderson. After my call  to the Bar of Ontario in 1990, I practiced exclusively in the area of intellectual property law until 1994 at Toronto's largest intellectual property law firm,  Bereskin & Parr .  I have had my own practice in Calgary since 1995. In January 2001 I formed an association with Brownlee Fryett, a prominent law firm in Alberta.

I am a registered patent and trade-mark agent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (C.I.P.O.), a registered patent agent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (U.S.P.T.O.), a registered professional engineer with P.E.O. (Professional Engineers Ontario), and an a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (I.P.I.C.).

I have authored papers and articles on various intellectual property topics in publications such as Patent World, Canadian Civil Engineer and The Business Exchange Magazine. I have lectured at Toronto's Learning Annex. and have been a speaker at the annual conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.

My practice has covered all areas of intellectual property law with a focus on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the mechanical and structural areas (devices and processes), as well as on trademarks and industrial designs. I have associates worldwide for overseas intellectual property protection.
